WITNESS: I can tell by the whistle what stage it's at. First whistle means maybe fifteen more minutes. Second whistle, ten. Third, maybe five. If the fourth whistle comes early, something is running short.
CHAIR: You have developed a system.
WITNESS: I didn't develop it. It's just what the cooker sounds like.
CHAIR: You have internalized a system.
WITNESS: I suppose.
CHAIR: What happens when the pattern is disrupted?
WITNESS: [pause] I go check.
CHAIR: Before you are asked to go check?
WITNESS: The disruption is asking me to go check.
CHAIR: The cooker communicates directly with you from another room without anyone involving you.
WITNESS: That's one way to describe it.
CHAIR: It is an accurate description. You are a member of a household in which the pressure cooker is an unofficial clock, and you have accepted the obligations that come with this role, including the obligation to monitor the whistles and respond to deviations in the pattern.
WITNESS: I think "obligations" is strong.
CHAIR: When did you last fail to respond to a fourth whistle that came early?
WITNESS: [long pause]
CHAIR: The record notes the pause.
WITNESS: I have always responded.
CHAIR: The rule is that pressure cooker distance remains mandatory while nobody volunteers to replace the habit. You have not volunteered to replace the habit.
WITNESS: Nobody replaces this. You just know it.
CHAIR: You knew it without being taught it.
WITNESS: Yes.
CHAIR: And a newcomer to the household would also come to know it.
WITNESS: Eventually.
CHAIR: Without being told.
WITNESS: [pause] Without being told.
