Incident description. Someone searches transaction history to remember who paid for a shared expense weeks earlier. The payment was made at the time of the expense using a mobile payment application. The payment was successful. No confirmation was requested from the other party at the time. Six weeks later, the shared expense came into question. Both parties searched their transaction histories.
Contributing factors. Cash leaves a physical record: a smaller wallet, a larger one, the memory of counting. Digital payment leaves a receipt in a feed of other receipts. At the time of payment the transaction was confirmed by the application and then scrolled past. Six weeks later the confirmation required scrolling back.
Payment history search adds one extra confirmation check. Both parties start waiting for visible proof. A fast payment develops a ceremony around certainty.
The payment is faster than cash while certainty arrives through extra checks. This is the incident's core finding. The payment mechanism optimizes the transaction moment. It does not optimize the dispute moment. The dispute moment was not anticipated at the time of payment. It is, however, routine. Shared expenses are routinely questioned six weeks later when accounts are settled.
