Incident Description

A scheduled thirty-minute call has connected at the designated start time. All five participants are present. The agenda contains four items. The call will not begin for some time.

Participants are not saying hello once. Participants are saying hello in sequence, then acknowledging the previous hellos, then adding brief pleasantries that invite additional responses. The pleasantries are genuine. They are also not on the agenda.

Phase Classification

The greeting phase of this call has been classified at Stage 3 (Compounding), which is defined as follows: the initial hello exchange has completed, but at least one participant has added a follow-up observation (typically about the weather, a recent event, or a shared acknowledgment of the week's quality) that has opened a secondary exchange, which has invited participation from participants who completed the initial exchange and are now re-entering.

Stage 3 has no natural termination point. Stage 3 ends when one participant says "OK, so" or "let's get started" or equivalent, which is its own social act that requires a participant willing to be the one who ends the greetings.

Observed Variants

Variant A: The Late Joiner Reset. A participant joins two minutes into the meeting. The greeting sequence partially restarts to acknowledge the new arrival. Participants who have already completed their greeting are uncertain whether to greet again.

Variant B: The Technical Difficulty Extension. Audio issues during the initial greeting require confirmation of resolution, extending the exchange. "Can you hear me now?" is structurally identical to "how are you?" in terms of its capacity to generate additional response cycles.

Variant C: The Overlap Spiral. Two participants say hello simultaneously. Both pause. Both say hello again. One apologizes for the overlap. The other says no no go ahead. The first says no please. A third participant greets both of them.

The Governing Rule

The greeting phase is not a formality preceding the meeting. The greeting phase is, for its duration, the meeting, and it runs on no clock that has ever been set.

The agenda exists. The agenda is acknowledged by all participants as the purpose of the call. The agenda will be reached. The agenda does not set the schedule for when it begins.

Incident Resolution

The call proceeded to the agenda at minute seven. Three of four agenda items were completed. The fourth was tabled for a follow-up call, which will also have a greeting phase.

Classification Decision

Reclassified from Incident to Standard Operating Condition, effective this notice. No corrective action recommended. Greeting phases perform social functions that precede productive function and are, according to available evidence, required for the productive function to proceed normally.

The greetings are the warmup. The warmup is the meeting.
