Incident Record: Friend ETA Tracking

Incident Type: Behavioral — Everyday Relationships Parties Involved: Two friends, one of whom was waiting Status: Resolved. Recurring.

Summary of Events

The waiting party (hereafter: the Waiter) arrived at the agreed location eleven minutes before the expected arrival time of the arriving party (hereafter: the Arriver).

The Arriver's live location was shared at the Waiter's request approximately eight minutes prior to the meeting time.

The Waiter is aware the Arriver is on the way. The Waiter received a message confirming this. The Waiter checked the dot fourteen times in nine minutes.

Sequence of Monitoring Activity

T-9 min: Dot is on the far side of a neighborhood the Waiter does not know well. Interpreted as: on track.

T-7 min: Dot has not moved as much as expected. Waiter reopens the app. Dot is now slightly closer. Waiter decides the map was loading slowly.

T-6 min: Waiter texts: "close?" Arriver replies: "5 mins." Waiter reopens dot to verify.

T-4 min: Dot is now three streets away. Waiter watches dot cross one street in real time. This is not useful information. The Waiter cannot do anything with this information.

T-2 min: Dot is very close. Waiter looks up from the phone toward the entrance.

T+0: Arriver appears. The Waiter says "hey!" with a naturalness that does not communicate fourteen dot checks.

Contributing Factors

Both parties understand the Arriver is coming. The situation is not uncertain. Directness about the wait feeling uncomfortable would be possible. It would also require acknowledging that the Waiter is anxious about the Arriver being late, which would require acknowledging that being late slightly matters, which would require having a conversation neither party is prepared to have at this particular cafe entrance.

The dot is easier.

Recurrence Pattern

The second instance of Friend ETA Tracking created a small accommodation: the Arriver now shares location automatically before the Waiter asks. The Waiter has begun predicting that share.

Both parties now defend the ritual. Neither requested it.

The dot serves as a substitute for a feeling that is easier to manage at a distance. The dot is very good at this job.
