Incident Description
Someone opens links in new tabs before deciding whether they are worth reading. This behavior was first observed in the current subject in 2019 and has since become a stable pattern requiring no external trigger.
Sequence of Events
- A link appears in a message, an email, or a shared document.
- The subject opens the link in a new tab.
- The tab joins between twelve and sixty-three other tabs, depending on the day of week and the current level of work stress, which is inversely correlated with the number of tabs that have been closed.
- The tab is not read at the time of opening.
- The tab is read later, or it is not.
- The tab acquires the status of unread task.
- The tab remains open because closing it unread would constitute a decision the subject has not yet made.
First consequence. The first case of link opening reflex changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject begins sending links to themselves via a note application as an alternative to opening them in tabs. The note application now contains ninety-four links in various states of review.
Second consequence. After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around link opening reflex. Productivity articles about tab management are opened in new tabs. They are not read.
