Incident Record: OTP Arrival Watch

Incident Type: Behavioral — Phone / Transaction Duration of Watch: 23 seconds Subjective Duration of Watch: Longer than 23 seconds

Summary

The user initiated a transaction. The transaction required OTP verification. The OTP was dispatched by the system.

The user opened the message inbox. The user watched the inbox. The inbox contained four unread messages from earlier. The user did not read those messages. The user watched the inbox for new arrivals.

Sequence

Second 1–4: Inbox open. No OTP. The user feels the gap between action and response. The gap is two seconds. It feels longer.

Second 5–8: The user reads the older messages without processing them. The user is not reading them. The user is watching for the OTP in the peripheral visual field created by having an inbox open.

Second 9–14: The user switches to the SMS inbox. The user has received the OTP on SMS in the past. The user has also received it as an app notification. The user is not sure which channel this particular service uses and has chosen to cover both.

Second 15–20: The user returns to the app. The OTP field cursor is blinking. This produces mild urgency. The urgency is not based on any time limit the user has confirmed.

Second 21–23: The OTP arrives. The user copies it. The user enters it. The transaction completes.

Why It Feels Slow

The next step is blocked. When the next step is blocked, time does not pass at its usual rate. This is not a technology finding. This is a human finding.

The OTP took twenty-three seconds. Twenty-three seconds in other contexts would be unnoticeable. In this context, it felt like four minutes.

The Shortcut

Some users have configured auto-read OTP functionality, which pre-fills the field on arrival.

This shortcut exists. The user has not configured it. The user knows it exists.

Configuring it requires locating the relevant setting and providing the correct permission. This is a three-minute task. The OTP watch adds approximately four subjective minutes of discomfort per occurrence.

The math has not changed the behavior. The shortcut is the formal option. The formal option feels like homework.

The watch will be performed again at the next transaction. This is already known.
