Interim Order on Eligibility Date Check
Eligibility date check is the pre-emptive verification of whether a promotional offer, service upgrade, or renewal benefit applies to the current account before the account holder has taken any action that would require knowing this.
FIELD NOTES: Eligibility Date Check: Observed Instances, Q2 2021
The eligibility date check has been observed in three contexts during the reporting period. In each context, the behavior follows the same sequence: awareness that an eligibility window may exist, verification that the window is open, confirmation of eligibility status, no subsequent action.
Instance 1: Phone Upgrade Window
The account holder became aware that an upgrade window might be available after seeing a promotional notification. The notification did not specify whether the account was eligible; it addressed a general audience. The account holder navigated to the account portal and confirmed eligibility. The upgrade window is open for ninety more days. No upgrade was initiated.
The offer window was open for ninety days. The check was performed on day three. It was performed again on day forty-one. It will be performed again before the window closes, possibly in the week before it closes, when urgency will be applied to a decision that has been available for eighty-three days.
Instance 2: Subscription Renewal Discount
The account holder received a notice that a discount was available for early renewal. Early renewal would save a specified amount over the standard renewal price. The account holder verified the discount's terms, confirmed eligibility, and did not renew. The account holder will renew at the standard price in seven weeks when the current subscription expires and the renewal prompt is harder to defer.
Instance 3: Benefits Reset
The account holder checked whether annual benefits had reset. They had. No benefits were used in the previous year. The benefits reset. No action was taken.
Forensic Concern
The eligibility is confirmed. No action follows. The field notes record forensic concern not about the inaction itself but about the confidence with which the check substitutes for the action. Confirming eligibility is experienced as task completion, and the task is not completed.
The interim order maintains the check as an observed behavior without reclassifying it as productive.
