Interim Order on Pillow Cool Side Search
A counterfactual examination of what would have happened if the pillow had never been turned in the first place.
COUNTERFACTUAL ANALYSIS Subject: Pillow Cool Side Search Question Posed: What Would Have Happened If the Pillow Had Not Been Turned?
Background
At some point, the subject turned a pillow over in search of the cooler side. The cooler side was found. Sleep became marginally easier for approximately 90 seconds, after which the cooler side reached body temperature and became indistinguishable from the previous side.
This is the founding event.
What Would Have Happened
Had the pillow not been turned, the subject would have experienced: 90 seconds of a warm pillow. This is the cost. The cost is 90 seconds of mild thermal discomfort at a moment when the subject was already preparing to lose consciousness.
Ninety seconds. The subject was about to be asleep.
The ritual is intended to make sleep easier, yet it gives wakefulness one more detail to manage. The flip is that detail. The flip is now standard procedure.
What Did Happen Instead
Any repeated case of pillow cool side search becomes standard procedure until someone deliberately replaces it. The subject flipped the pillow. It worked, briefly. The brief success was registered. It was retained.
Pillow cool side search solves the immediate inconvenience once. That success makes repetition feel safer than reconsidering the behavior from scratch. The next night: the flip. The night after: the flip. Three years later: the flip, performed in a hotel with unfamiliar pillows, in a room that was not warm, for reasons the subject could not articulate if asked.
The Counterfactual Outcome
Had the pillow not been turned on the founding night, the sequence of events would have been: 90 seconds of a warm pillow, then sleep. The subject would have experienced this as a minor nuisance and then forgotten it.
The pillow would not have been turned. The flip would not be standard procedure. The subject would not, in year three, be flipping hotel pillows out of habit.
Current Status
After enough repeats, the workaround survives even when the original inconvenience is gone. The subject now lives in a climate-controlled apartment. The pillow is cool on both sides.
The flip still happens.
The subject reports that the pillow feels better after flipping. This has not been independently verified. It has also not been investigated, because investigating it would require withholding the flip, and the flip is not optional at this stage of the protocol.
