Interim Order on Room Title Bait Forensic Analysis of Entry and Retention Mechanisms

The Room

A room has been created on a live audio platform. The title of the room makes a claim. The claim implies that the room will contain a specific type of discussion, featuring specific types of participants, addressing a topic that the person browsing has a genuine interest in.

The room has 340 listeners and 4 speakers.

Entry

The person enters the room. The speakers are mid-conversation. The conversation does not address the topic indicated by the title. The conversation addresses an adjacent topic, or a topic that could become the indicated topic after additional context, or a topic that the speakers find more interesting than the one they advertised.

The person stays. They are not sure why.

Forensic Finding One: The Sunk Cost Effect

The person has already entered the room. Entry is not reversible in any meaningful way, but the person treats it as an investment. Having listened for sixty seconds, they feel that leaving immediately would waste the sixty seconds. They extend the observation period.

The observation period becomes five minutes. The topic has not changed.

Forensic Finding Two: The Maybe Effect

The title suggested a topic. The speakers have not addressed the topic. The title has not been explained or retracted. This creates a condition in which the topic may still arrive. The person remains because arrival is possible, not because arrival is likely.

The arrival has not occurred in six minutes of listening.

Forensic Finding Three: The Exit Problem

Leaving the room requires a decision, and a decision acknowledges that the room was entered on the basis of a claim that has not been honored. The acknowledgment is minor but present. The person stays in the room longer than they should because leaving feels like a verdict.

The speakers are unaware that a verdict is being considered.

The Title

The title was written to produce entry behavior. The title succeeded. The title was the product. The conversation was the room's actual content. These are different things, and the platform provides no mechanism for distinguishing them before entry.

The Interim Order

The interim order, issued by the person to themselves, is as follows: rooms whose titles have not been addressed within three minutes of entry may be exited without further deliberation.

The order has been issued before. The order has not been consistently followed.

The Contradiction

Occasionally the room delivers. Occasionally the speakers arrive at the topic indicated by the title after a period of unrelated conversation, and the discussion is good, and the person is glad they stayed. This happens often enough to make the maybe effect rational on average, which is why the maybe effect persists.

The title bait works because occasionally it is not bait.
