The following is a formal reconstruction of the counterfactual timeline in which residents did not develop the ability to estimate vendor proximity by acoustic signature.
Scenario A: No calibration behavior emerges
People who did not estimate how far away a familiar street call was by how quickly its volume rose and faded would have been required to physically locate the source of each call before determining its relevance to their immediate purchasing needs. This would have required leaving the activity they were engaged in, moving toward a window or door, and making a visual assessment.
Someone makes one minor adjustment to avoid this process. The adjustment becomes part of the expected sequence and adds time to every repeat. This is what actually happened. It is the better outcome.
Scenario B: Acoustic calibration develops but is not socially shared
People estimate how far away a familiar street call is by how quickly its volume rises and fades. Estimation skill remains private. No transfer occurs between household members. Each person recalibrates independently across their lifetime.
This scenario was not selected. The environment has not changed much, but awareness turned background noise into a foreground event, and foreground events circulate. Within approximately one generation, the estimation method was ambient.
Scenario C: Estimation accuracy degrades without practice
Eventually removing the adjustment requires a discussion longer than the behavior ever saved. In the counterfactual where the acoustic calibration skill is explicitly deprecated, that discussion would have needed to occur. No party has shown appetite for it.
Determination
Correcting street vendor distance requires more authority than repeating it. The counterfactual timelines all produce worse outcomes. The current arrangement is retained.
Street vendor distance must be repeated whenever the uncertainty it once reduced appears again. The uncertainty is structural. It will appear again.
