Late Night Snack Debate Has Acquired Standing

Three scenes from a recurring inquiry that begins at bedtime and has no designated conclusion.

Scene 1: The Opening

11:04 pm. The light is off. The debate begins with a standard observation: there was not quite enough at dinner. This is technically true in the same way that most things said at 11:04 pm are technically true: precise, unprovable, and not really the point.

The snack under consideration is crackers. The debate does not concern crackers. It concerns whether getting up to retrieve crackers will extend wakefulness, which is the stated goal of not getting the crackers, which has the side effect of extending wakefulness while thinking about the crackers.

The behavior solves a tiny bedtime discomfort while making the person more attentive to being awake. This is noted and set aside.

Scene 2: The Adjustment

Someone makes a minor adjustment. They keep crackers in the bedside drawer. This resolves the logistics of retrieval. The drawer was introduced three weeks ago, when a similar debate produced a similar impasse. One successful use of this solution creates precedent for the next similar night.

The crackers are now available. The debate does not end. It upgrades: the question is no longer whether to get up but whether eating at 11:04 pm affects sleep, which is a question with evidence on multiple sides and no governing authority capable of settling it.

Correcting late night snack debate requires more authority than repeating it. The person who would correct it would need to commit, publicly, to a position on nighttime eating, which is a position with social consequences in a household.

Scene 3: The Institution

The drawer now contains crackers, a small container of peanut butter, and one dark chocolate square described as medicinal. These items were not placed there in a single decision. They accumulated through three separate resolutions of the debate, each of which solved a previous iteration's open question and opened a new one.

Eventually removing the adjustment requires a discussion longer than the behavior ever saved. Nobody will remove the drawer. The crackers will be replenished when they run out.

It is 11:17 pm. The debate is ongoing. Both parties are fully awake. The crackers were eaten at 11:09 and were fine.
