Late Reply Apology Has Exceeded Its Original Mandate
A group chat member apologizes for replying slowly to a message that was not expecting a reply at any speed.
The message had been sent three days ago. It was a photo of a sunset. It required nothing.
On the third day, the reply arrived: "Sorry for the late response! This is beautiful."
The group considered this.
The photo had not expected a response. The sender had not expected a response. The sender had posted the photo in the same spirit in which people post photos of sunsets: because the sunset existed and the phone was already in hand.
But now there was an apology. And an apology implies a transgression. And a transgression implies someone who was wronged.
The group moved into interpretation.
Had others been planning to reply and had now been beaten to it? Were they late too? Did the apology create an obligation for the others who had also not replied? Was their silence now officially overdue, where before it had simply been silence?
One member typed a reply, deleted it, typed it again. The reply was: "No worries!" This seemed to validate the apology, which validated the original premise, which was that someone had been waiting for a reply to a sunset photo.
The governing rule: a group chat decision is not final until silence has been interpreted as consent.
The corollary: an apology for silence converts the silence retroactively into a delay.
A third member sent a reaction to the sunset photo. A full reaction, not a reply: just a small red heart appearing below the image. This was intended to suggest that the third member had always appreciated the photo and simply expressed appreciation differently.
This worked for approximately six minutes, after which someone replied to the reaction with a thumbs up, at which point the thread contained four messages about a sunset that none of them had been discussing.
The sunset is no longer visible. The thread remains open.
