Once leftover box optimism prevents one wasted meal, it must remain in force for the rest of the refrigeration cycle.

Status: Active. Escalating.
Observation
A container of restaurant leftovers is placed in the refrigerator with genuine intent. The person placing it states, or privately believes, that it will be consumed within two days. This belief is sincere at the time of storage.
The container is moved to the front of the shelf on day two. It is moved to the front of the shelf again on day three. It is moved to the front of the shelf on day four by a different household member who does not know it has already been moved twice.
Consequence One
The container acquires a location of priority it no longer merits as an object but fully merits as a symbol of intent. Moving it to a less prominent shelf would require acknowledging that the intent was aspirational rather than operational. No one is prepared to do this. The container remains in front.
Consequence Two
The front-of-shelf position begins displacing food that will actually be eaten. A container of yogurt that expires today is not immediately visible. A bag of vegetables with a shorter window than the leftovers sits behind the leftovers. The leftover box optimism is now reorganizing the refrigerator in accordance with its own priorities.
Consequence Three
A household member opens the container on day five and finds it has crossed the threshold. There is a brief moment of administrative processing. The container is then discarded. The household member makes no announcement. The discarding happens quietly, in a manner that does not invite comment, because the comment would require acknowledging that the original placement was optimism rather than planning.
Absurd Rule in Force
The container must be preserved through at least four days of sincere placement in prominent shelf position before disposal is considered acceptable. Disposal on day two is considered giving up. Disposal on day five is considered natural resolution. The distinction has no basis in food safety.
Contradiction Under Review
The optimism is functionally identical to pessimism because both result in the same outcome: the food is not eaten. The difference is administrative. The optimism produces a front-shelf container, two reorganizations, one displaced yogurt, and a quiet disposal. Pessimism would have produced the disposal on day one.
The box is preserved past the point where preservation serves any purpose other than confirming that preservation was attempted.
Finding
Leftover box optimism is in active deployment and shows no indication of revision. The preliminary findings are forwarded without recommendation. A recommendation would require agreement about whether the goal is eating the food or managing the intention to eat the food. These are different goals.
