Memorandum on Fan Noise Absence
An essay documenting the forensic properties of a sound that is only audible after it stops.
I.
The fan runs. The room is an ordinary volume. Nobody in the room thinks about the room's volume because it is indistinguishable from silence.
Then the fan stops.
The person working at the desk notices the fan has stopped. They notice this because the room is now louder. Nothing new has been added to the room. A sound has been removed. The room is louder.
This is the paradox of fan noise absence: the room becomes more audible as a consequence of becoming quieter. The sound that was present provided coverage. The absence of the sound provides nothing but the sounds the coverage had been absorbing.
II.
The first instance of fan noise absence is treated as a personal preference. The subject finds the room too loud without the fan. They turn the fan back on. This is not unusual. They do not explain it to anyone.
A second person enters the room. The fan is running. They do not ask why. Later they notice that the fan is always running when work is happening in this room. They begin to treat this as environmental information. This is the point at which a personal preference becomes shared procedure: when a second party adjusts to it without being told to adjust.
The sound matters least when it is steady and most when it changes, stops, or refuses to match expectation. Once the steady state is the state with the fan running, any deviation from this becomes a source of information. The fan stopping becomes a signal. The room is now a system with a status indicator, and the indicator is the fan.
III.
Under the governing rule, fan noise absence remains mandatory while nobody volunteers to replace the habit.
This is the condition that gives ambient noise its durability. The person who introduced the fan into the room does not hold a formal position of authority over the room's acoustic conditions. They simply acted first. The action was repeated. The repetition was observed. The observation was accommodated.
Eventually a newcomer can violate the rule without ever having been told the rule exists. The fan is off. The room is too loud. They are not certain why the room is too loud. They are told about the fan. The fan goes back on. The information has been transmitted, which is the only way this kind of rule spreads.
