Microwave Time Inheritance Has Acquired Standing

Scene 1

The microwave displayed 1:47 when she arrived in the kitchen at 8:14 AM. She had not put 1:47 there. Someone else had used the microwave, heated something for two minutes thirteen seconds, opened the door before the timer finished, and left.

She pressed 1:47 and started the microwave. Her oatmeal took 2:30. The 1:47 was not accurate. It was the number that was there. One successful use of microwave time inheritance creates precedent for the next similar moment.

Scene 2

He noticed the number the following week. It said 0:43. He pressed it. His coffee was cold. He added another minute. The two-step process took approximately the same time as entering 1:43 would have, and produced less accuracy.

That success made repetition feel safer than reconsidering the behavior from scratch.

He told no one. There was nothing to tell. There was just the number that was there, and the decision to use it, and the slight efficiency gain of not pressing four separate buttons when three buttons and a start were available.

Scene 3

The display showed 3:12. Nobody had used the microwave in two days. The last person had heated something, stopped it at 3:12, and gone to bed. The 3:12 had persisted through two nights, a morning, an afternoon, and another morning.

She stood in front of the microwave for a moment. The setting is reversible. Changing it would require pressing clear, pressing her desired time, pressing start. Three additional steps. The existing number required one step.

But 3:12 was someone else's invisible preference. Overruling it felt, briefly, like interrupting a conversation that was still happening.

She pressed clear. She entered her time. She started the microwave.

The workaround survived until the exact moment someone chose not to use it, which was the first time in eleven days anyone had actively decided.

The microwave showed 0:00. Nobody had put 0:00 there. It was just what was left.
