The committee convened at the conclusion of the fiscal year to review a behavior that has achieved near-universal penetration among dining adults: the photograph taken of a meal before the meal is consumed.

The first finding concerns purpose. The meal photograph is taken before eating. Its relationship to the act of eating is preparatory in timing and ambiguous in function. The second finding concerns the fate of the photograph. In a small percentage of cases, the photograph is posted to a platform where it receives responses. In the majority of cases, the photograph enters a camera roll where it will be encountered months later during a storage-management session and viewed with mild recognition before being archived.

The third finding concerns the meal's temperature. The photograph is taken at peak visual quality. Peak visual quality coincides with peak temperature. The documentation of peak quality reduces the experience of peak quality by a measurable interval.

The absurd rule that the committee has identified is that the meal's existence must be recorded before it is permitted to cease existing through consumption.

The contradiction is that the meal was prepared or purchased in order to be eaten, and a structural pause now precedes that purpose.

The committee does not recommend discontinuation. The practice is too embedded and the photographic record is occasionally useful for remembering what one ate in a city three years ago.
