Minutes Regarding Delivery Ping Fixation
Any case of delivery ping fixation repeated twice must count as policy until someone deliberately breaks it.
HOUSEHOLD MEETING MINUTES Item 3 of 6: The Delivery Ping Situation
Attendees: All residents present.
Background
A delivery was placed at 9:40 AM with an estimated arrival window of 2:00 to 6:00 PM. The delivery app was opened at 10:15 AM to check the current status. The status was: processing.
The app was subsequently opened at 10:47, 11:23, 12:08, 12:41, 1:15, 1:44, and 2:02 PM. On none of these occasions had the status changed.
The Core Issue
The delivery ping fixation steals one extra check of the screen. The check is not triggered by a notification. The delivery app was opened independently of any incoming notification. The notification is called noise. Ignoring it creates more attention to the question of what it said.
In this case, the notification had not been received yet. The checking preceded the notification. The checking was an attempt to produce the certainty the notification would have provided.
Discussion
The first resident stated that checking the delivery status is productive because it allows advance preparation.
The second resident noted that the advance preparation required is opening the door, which takes approximately five seconds and requires no advance notice.
The first resident acknowledged this.
The Governing Rule
Under the governing rule, delivery ping fixation becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The subject who has checked the tracking page seven times before the delivery arrives will check eight times on the next delivery. The check before the check that precedes the notification is now part of the sequence.
The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. Muting the alerts does not mute the awareness that delivery is in progress. The awareness prompts checking at roughly the same rate the alerts would have.
Action Items
None approved. The delivery arrived at 4:47 PM. The subject was in the kitchen and did not hear the buzzer. The delivery was left at the door.
Next Meeting
Unscheduled.
