Minutes Regarding Follower Room Check Annual Review: Professional Network Composition and Status Assessment

Review Initiated

At 11:15pm on a Thursday, a person opened LinkedIn with the intention of posting a brief update about a project. The post was not written. The review of the network began instead.

This is a common outcome.

Category 1: Known Colleagues

247 connections are people the reviewer has worked with directly. These connections were formed through shared projects, org charts, and the post-meeting connection request, which is a social norm that emerged in approximately 2017 and became mandatory by 2019.

Of the 247, the reviewer is in active communication with 31. They have not spoken to 89 in over two years. For 127 of them, the most recent interaction was a LinkedIn message that was read but not replied to, or a reply that was read but not continued.

The connection is maintained. The relationship it represents is historical.

Category 2: Recruiters

114 connections are recruiters. The connection was accepted because declining a recruiter request requires a decision about the future that most people would rather not make explicitly. Acceptance requires no decision about anything.

The connection was accepted. The conversation did not follow. Neither party re-initiated. The connection persists as a mutual acknowledgment that the other person exists professionally.

Category 3: Unrecognized Names

73 connections are people the reviewer cannot place. The connections were accepted at some point, with some context, in response to some shared signal (mutual connections, industry, event attendance) that is no longer recoverable.

These connections are not wrong. They are simply unrooted. They exist as nodes without edges.

Finding

In the second year of remote work, the LinkedIn network has become the primary directory of professional relationships, including relationships that are not, by any other definition, relationships.

The network shows 434 connections. The reviewer has a first name for 247, a face for 189, and a conversation they could continue without preparation for 31.

Secondary Finding

The post that initiated this review was never written. The intended update will carry over to a future date. The audit of connections has been completed, acted on in no way, and closed.

Review Adjourned

No changes to the connection list are planned. The unrecognized names remain connected. The recruiters remain present. The 98 colleagues who were never replied to are unaware of their status in this taxonomy.

The network is 434 people strong.
