Notice Concerning Audio Friend Discovery
Once audio friend discovery prevents one awkward moment, it must remain in force for the rest of the routine.
SUBJECT: Annual Review of Audio Friend Discovery (AFD): Q4 2021
Status: Active. Pending no revision.
Summary of Findings
Audio friend discovery was observed in consistent deployment during the review period. Someone learns what acquaintances are interested in by seeing which live rooms they repeatedly join, and this information becomes part of how those acquaintances are understood, referenced, and in some cases messaged.
A temporary workaround for audio friend discovery became the default because it worked once. The workaround was the rooms tab, used originally to browse topics, which displayed not just topics but a list of people currently in rooms, which included people known to the user who had not publicly announced their interests in any other context.
Process Dependencies
The person now knows what three acquaintances are interested in. The acquaintances do not know this is known.
This asymmetry is not unusual. Passive information acquisition in social contexts produces asymmetric awareness routinely. What is notable about audio friend discovery is that the platform was designed to surface this information, which means the acquaintances consented to the visibility, which means the asymmetry is sanctioned by the terms they agreed to, which none of the parties to the discovery reviewed before it occurred.
Contradiction Under Review
Other people began planning around the workaround and quietly preserving it. Before sending a message to an acquaintance about a topic the acquaintance is interested in, a check of the rooms tab confirms whether that interest is still active. This check takes four seconds. It is conducted before the message is drafted. The message typically references the interest without disclosing the source.
A person using the ordinary method of asking someone what they are interested in now has to explain why they asked, given that the information was available on a public platform. Audio friend discovery has made the direct question feel more intrusive than the indirect observation.
Recommendation
No revision recommended at this time. Audio friend discovery performs its function, which is not social research but routine ambient awareness of the same kind produced by seeing someone at the gym, noticing what podcast they reviewed, or recognizing their name in a comment thread for a topic they had not previously mentioned.
The app made the ambient awareness legible. Legibility changed nothing about the practice except its name.
File for next annual review.
