Notice Concerning Bedroom Office Guilt
The bedroom functions as an office during working hours. During non-working hours, it functions as the place where work happened today.
To: Current Occupants of the Bedroom From: The Bedroom Office Review Committee Re: Bedroom Office Guilt: Formal Notice Date: October 2021
This notice acknowledges the ongoing condition documented in prior informal reviews: the bedroom, which serves as the primary place of sleep and rest, also serves as the primary place of work, and the coexistence of these functions has produced a third function that was not requested, which is the function of reminder.
The Room Has Two Jobs
The room was assigned the work function in March 2020. The assignment was temporary. The temporary assignment has continued. The room now holds a desk, a monitor, a charging cable that functions as both a work cable and a personal cable, a notebook that contains both work notes and non-work notes, and a chair that is described by its manufacturer as ergonomic and by its occupant as the chair where the hard conversations happen.
The room has not changed. Its meaning has acquired a secondary layer that was not part of the original design.
The Guilt
The guilt arises in the transition period between work hours and non-work hours. The laptop closes. The monitor goes dark. The chair is pushed in. These actions are the formal conclusion of the work session.
The room does not receive this information. It cannot. The room contains the same objects it contained during work hours. The objects do not transform. The desk that was a work surface at five forty-five remains a desk at seven thirty. It looks the same. It is the same.
The guilt is the awareness, during the non-work hours, that the work surface is present. This awareness is not optional. It cannot be turned off by the closing of the laptop.
Administrative Position
The committee takes no position on whether the guilt is rational. The committee notes that the guilt does not prevent rest, nor does it produce additional work. It produces only the awareness of work's proximity. This awareness has a cost that is not measured in any formal system.
Notice
The occupants are informed that the condition is known, documented, and not resolved. The desk will remain. The monitor will remain. The chair will remain. The guilt will arrive each evening at approximately the time the work session ends and will remain at a level that is, by this point in the year, well within normal parameters.
The committee recommends acknowledgment and continuation. No other options are currently available.
