Notice of Unexpected Schedule Relief
When a friend cancels plans you were genuinely looking forward to, the first feeling is sometimes relief, and the second feeling is confusion about why you agreed to the plans.
The plans were made on a Tuesday, for the following Saturday, with genuine enthusiasm.
By Friday, both parties were privately hoping for a cancellation. Nobody said this. By Saturday morning, the hope had intensified. By Saturday afternoon, one party acted on it.
The Incident
The message arrived at 6:47pm. The plans were for 7:30. The message said something came up, so sorry, can we reschedule? You replied immediately with of course, no worries, hope everything is okay. You were already looking for your most comfortable trousers.
This sequence took under three minutes. The relief arrived before the trousers did.
The Classification
The relief is not about the friend. This requires clarification, because the friend is a good friend, the plans were made in good faith, and the evening would almost certainly have been enjoyable. The relief is about the evening itself: the getting ready, the travel, the performance of being a person out in the world at 7:30pm on a Saturday when you have been performing that all week.
The plans were not the problem. The timing was the problem. The timing is always the problem.
The Mutual Structure
Both parties sent sad faces in the message exchange. Both parties changed into comfortable clothes within four minutes of the cancellation. Neither party mentioned this in the rescheduling message, which was sent three days later, for a date four weeks away.
The new plans were also made with genuine enthusiasm. By the following Thursday, both parties would privately begin hoping for another cancellation.
The Private Rule
Nobody discusses this openly because discussing it would require admitting that the looking-forward-to and the please-cancel can exist simultaneously, in the same person, about the same event, without contradiction. This is a well-known feature of being a social creature with limited energy, but it is not a comfortable thing to say directly.
Instead, both parties have developed a system. Plans are made. Hope for cancellation is maintained privately. If cancellation occurs, relief is expressed through comfortable clothing and an unusually productive evening. If cancellation does not occur, the evening is genuinely enjoyed.
The system works. Nobody talks about the system. The system continues.
