If background door vigilance happens twice, the call must treat it as etiquette until someone risks objecting.

Classification
Background door vigilance is hereby classified as standard video call behavior, effective from the date on which the second participant was observed practicing it without prompting.
Description of Classified Behavior
Someone keeps one eye on a closed door because another person's entrance would become public in a way that an entrance into a non-broadcasted room would not. The person on the call did not expect this to be part of calling. It became part of calling.
Grounds for Classification
Meeting etiquette is valid whenever enough people copy a behavior before anyone names it. This behavior has not been named in any style guide. It does not appear in any written policy. It has been practiced by a sufficient number of people for a sufficient duration to constitute de facto standard.
First consequence. The first case of background door vigilance changes one small decision without being discussed. A person on a call repositions slightly so that the door is not in frame. This adjustment is made without conscious acknowledgment. It is made every time.
Second consequence. After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around background door vigilance. Some people hang a sign on the door. The sign is a separate artifact that would not have existed before video calls became permanent infrastructure. The sign is accepted as reasonable.
Third consequence. Eventually background door vigilance acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. An interruption visible on camera is treated differently than an interruption that is audible but not visible. The camera is not policy. It functions as policy.
Statement on the Contradiction
The call was meant to simplify coordination. Everyone spends energy managing how participation looks. These two facts are not reconcilable. They are both true.
