Observations Concerning Scroll Thumb Fatigue
Someone notices their thumb is tired before noticing they have been watching videos for forty minutes.
The thumb is a reliable instrument. It reports accurately. The problem is that it reports on a narrower channel than would be useful.
Scroll thumb fatigue is the phenomenon in which a person becomes aware that their thumb is tired before becoming aware of any other consequence of what they have been doing for the past thirty to fifty minutes. This is not a moral observation. It is a sequencing problem.
The mechanics are simple. The feed presents each clip as a self-contained unit. Each clip is genuinely short. Each clip ends. What does not end is the sequence. The sequence has no visible bottom. The act of stopping requires a positive decision. The act of continuing requires no decision at all.
Each clip is easy to leave while the feed removes a natural stopping point. This is the structural condition under which scroll thumb fatigue develops. No individual clip is the cause. The cause is the architecture of the next clip.
Under the governing rule, scroll thumb fatigue becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The person who experiences it once is a person who opened a short video. The person who experiences it regularly has reorganized their idle time around a format that does not end.
The three consequences are observable.
Scroll thumb fatigue extends the break by one clip. Then by the several clips that follow that clip. The feed removes clear boundaries between them. The break becomes a session. The session does not have a duration the person chose. It has a duration determined by when physical fatigue becomes legible.
The body registers physical fatigue before the mind registers that the break ended some time ago.
This is not unique to 2023. What is specific to this period is the normalization: the short video feed became the default structure for idle time in a way that made any alternative require explanation. Staring out of a window is eccentric. Scrolling is ordinary.
The observations are complete. Nothing is recommended. The thumb will report again tomorrow.
