Overview
Rain intensity listening is an audio-based assessment process conducted from an interior position by someone who has access to a window and has not used it. The process relies on sound transmitted through walls, ceilings, and window glass to form a conclusion about outdoor conditions.

Stage 1: Initial Detection
Rain is heard. The sound originates from the ceiling, the window frame, or the balcony overhang. This stage lasts approximately three seconds and produces the finding that it is raining.
Stage 2: Intensity Assessment, First Pass
The listener adjusts their head position to optimize acoustic reception. This may involve tilting the head slightly or lowering background noise, such as pausing a video or reducing the volume of something. The listener is now actively monitoring rain intensity.
Stage 3: Inconclusive Period
Rain is variable. The sound fluctuates. The listener suspects it may be getting heavier or may be letting up. Both possibilities are considered for approximately thirty seconds without a conclusion being reached. This stage sometimes ends when the rain makes a distinctive sound against a hard surface, which the listener interprets as evidence.
Stage 4: Extended Listening
Stage four is the moment at which the subject could simply walk to the window, a journey of approximately four seconds, but does not, because the acoustic record still feels incomplete. The listener is now committed to the audio assessment.
Stage 5: Resolution
The listener reaches a conclusion: heavy, moderate, or light. This conclusion is based on sound alone and does not require verification. If the listener later goes to the window and finds the assessment was incorrect, this will be attributed to the rain changing, not to the method.
