The sock is alone. Its partner is missing. The sock has been kept for three months on the possibility that its partner will be found.

THE HOLDING PERIOD
Upon discovering a sock without a partner, the sock enters a holding period. The holding period is the interval between losing the partner and deciding what to do about it.
The holding period has no defined end. It continues until: (a) The partner is found. (b) A decision is made to end the holding period. (c) The holding area is reorganized, at which point decisions are made about its contents by momentum.
THE HOLDING AREA
The single sock requires a location that is not its original location (the drawer, which contains matched pairs) and not the bin. The holding area is typically: a shelf, a basket, a corner of a drawer, or a bag. The holding area accumulates single socks over time.
THE SEARCH
The partner may be anywhere:
- In another item of clothing, particularly a sleeve or leg.
- Under furniture.
- In a bag or pocket.
- In a previous address.
- Nowhere findable.
The search is typically not conducted systematically. The partner is expected to surface naturally. It usually does not.
THE DISPOSAL THRESHOLD
The single sock may be disposed of when:
- The holding period exceeds three months.
- The holding area contains more than ten single socks.
- A partner is confirmed lost (moved away, different size, different color than remembered).
RECOMMENDATION: Dispose after six weeks. The probability of partner recovery does not improve with time.
Current status of sock collection: seventeen single socks. Oldest: eleven months. Recommendation has not been acted upon.
