Preliminary Finding on Endless Settings Search

After the second endless settings search, avoidance becomes the approved way to remain technically available.

Annual Review: Endless Settings Search
Period: January through December 2022
Status: Unresolved

Executive Summary

Someone opens settings to solve a small problem and leaves after forgetting which menu started the search. This was documented in Q1, again in Q2, and at increasing frequency through the year. By December, the behavior had moved from incident to pattern.

This review documents the year's findings.

Q1 Finding

The subject noticed a notification behavior that seemed incorrect. Settings was opened. The search consumed seven minutes. The notification behavior was not found under the menu the subject expected. Two other menus were visited. A third. The notification behavior was resolved by closing settings and waiting to see if the behavior recurred.

It did not recur. The root menu was never identified.

Q2 Finding

A different problem. Same sequence. The settings menu was opened with a specific destination in mind and exited with a different problem partly addressed and the original problem deferred.

The tool is supposed to save attention, yet using it creates another thing that demands attention. By Q2, settings itself had become a thing that demanded attention, as a space to be navigated rather than a resource to be consulted.

Q3 Finding

The behavior was now automatic. Small problems triggered a settings entry that was no longer expected to resolve anything on first contact.

Q4 Finding (Current)

The first case of endless settings search changes one small decision without being discussed. The subject no longer opens settings with a specific menu in mind. The subject opens settings as a gesture toward the problem, which is a different and more stable relationship to the interface.

After repetition, other people begin adjusting their behavior around endless settings search. A colleague's question about a device problem is now answered with: have you tried going into settings. This advice does not specify which setting.

Recommendation

Any digital burden may remain permanent if dismissing it takes less effort than fixing its source. The eventual fix is usually not in settings. Settings is where the problem is acknowledged.

Eventually endless settings search acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. The investigation is ongoing. End of period report.
