Preliminary Findings on Airport Queue Patience
Bodies recalibrated for indoor distance are now operating in airports where recalibration has not yet completed.
PRELIMINARY FINDINGS: AIRPORT QUEUE PATIENCE
Working Report. Status: Ongoing. Findings subject to revision.
Background
Travel returned. Airports filled. Queues formed in the usual places: security, boarding, baggage claim. The physical procedures are unchanged from previous experience. The queues are the same width, the same temperature, the same acoustics.
The subjects are not the same.
Observation 1: Threshold Reduction
The patience available for close-proximity waiting has decreased measurably in the field. Subjects who previously waited thirty-minute security queues without notable physiological response now report heightened discomfort at the same duration.
This is not a complaint. It is a calibration reading. The available patience was built through repeated exposure. The exposure stopped. The patience followed.
Observation 2: The Activity Is Ordinary, the Body Disagrees
Under the governing rule, airport queue patience becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The body has not completed this update.
The activity is ordinary again while the body still treats it as negotiable. Air travel has resumed its pre-period status as a routine inconvenience. The autonomic response has not received the memo. These two systems are operating on different schedules.
Observation 3: Spatial Negotiation
Airport queue patience causes one small physical adjustment. Nearby people begin mirroring the adjustment. The room develops etiquette nobody has formally announced.
People leave slightly more space in queues than they did before. This is not coordinated. It is emergent. Several people making independent calibration adjustments produce a collective behavior that resembles a policy.
Nobody voted on it. It persists.
Preliminary Conclusion
Airport queue patience inherited from indoor years expires only after the body stops doing it automatically. Some bodies are further along this recovery than others. The airport does not distinguish between them. The queue does not accommodate the timeline.
The friend who still notices airport queue patience in ordinary public life is not unusual. They are early in the recalibration curve, or honest about where they are on it.
Further observation required. Data collection is ongoing.
