Preliminary Findings on Household Stock Count
Once household stock count prevents one awkward moment, it must remain in force for the rest of the routine.

1. Definitions
"Stock count" means the mental or written enumeration of household consumable items performed before, during, or after a grocery order. "Orderer" means the household member responsible for the current order. "Count discrepancy" means the difference between the count performed and the count that would have been performed if the pantry had been opened.
2. Scope of the Count
The stock count covers items the orderer believes are present, items the orderer believes may be running low, and items the orderer believes may be absent but is not certain about. Items that were present the last time the pantry was opened are presumed present unless evidence to the contrary has been received.
The pantry may not have been opened recently. This is not considered a deficiency in the count.
3. Count Integrity
The count is performed before ordering. The count is performed again during ordering, when the application prompts for item quantities. The count does not match. The second count reflects the orderer's uncertainty at the moment of selection. The first count reflects the orderer's confidence at the moment of enumeration. Neither count reflects the actual state of the pantry.
By accepting these terms, the orderer acknowledges that the count is an estimate and that the order will be placed as if the estimate is a measurement.
4. Discrepancy Resolution
When a delivered item is found to duplicate an existing item in the pantry, the orderer shall not be held responsible, provided the orderer performed a count in good faith. Good faith is defined as having thought about it for a moment before ordering.
A count performed while distracted is still a count. A count performed without opening the pantry is still a count.
5. Limitation of Liability
The count does not guarantee accuracy. Accuracy is a separate function that requires opening the pantry, counting the items, and cross-referencing the count against the order in progress. This process takes between four and eight minutes and is considered disproportionate to the risk of one duplicate item.
6. Amendment
These terms govern household stock count indefinitely. They may be amended when the pantry develops a transparent door or when the orderer begins writing things down, whichever comes first.
