The joke dates from 2019. The current version bears a structural resemblance to the original. The meaning has changed three times. The laughter is the same.

The Original
The original inside joke was specific. It referenced a precise event, a precise phrase, and a precise reaction. The people who were there remember it with accuracy. The joke, when told among those people, functions with full fidelity.
The Mutation
The joke has been told approximately eighty times since 2019 across three groups of friends and one work social. Each telling involved some compression of the origin story and some calibration for the audience. Compression and calibration introduce variations.
By 2021: the specific event was shortened to a category ("that time at the trip") which was accurate but less precise.
By 2022: the phrase central to the joke had been slightly modified to be funnier in isolation rather than funnier as a reference. The modification was small.
By 2023: a new group member received the explanation "there was this thing that happened and [phrase] became the way we describe it." The phrase now had an origin story that was different from the actual origin story but was sufficient to make the phrase funny.
The Three Versions
Person A's version: the original, fully accurate, specific to 2019. Person B's version: slightly modified phrase, accurate context. New group member's version: simplified origin, correct phrase, functional understanding.
All three find the same moment funny when the phrase is used.
The Finding
The joke works in all three versions. The original meaning is not necessary for the laughter. The laughter is the product of shared recognition of the phrase and its established usage, not the original event.
The joke has survived its own meaning. This is how jokes last.
