Background
The mute button has two states: muted and unmuted. The indicator for each state is visible on screen. The indicator is accurate. The indicator was designed to eliminate uncertainty about the current mute state.
The indicator has not eliminated uncertainty. The checking continues.
The Asymmetry
Mute button checking is driven by asymmetry in the consequences of each error:
If the person believes they are muted but are unmuted: all ambient sounds, personal comments, and private conversations are transmitted to call participants. The consequences range from mild to significant depending on content.
If the person believes they are unmuted but are muted: they speak without being heard. The consequence is a brief pause and a "you're on mute" notification.
The second error is recoverable in four seconds. The first error may produce experiences that persist in professional memory for years.
The Findings
Given this asymmetry, repeated verification of mute status is rational. The cost of checking is low (one second of attention). The cost of an error is high in one direction and negligible in the other. Frequent checking is the appropriate response to this structure.
The indicator is accurate. The checks are redundant. Both of these things are true simultaneously.
The Dog Variable
The dog's bark at 10:23am prompted a check. This check was triggered by the addition of a new ambient sound that the person wished to confirm was not being transmitted. This is a valid trigger.
The dog's bark at 10:47am prompted a second check. The mute status had not changed between 10:23 and 10:47. The second check confirmed the same state as the first.
The dog is not a threat to the call. The mute indicator is accurate. The checking will continue for the duration of the call.
