Preliminary Findings on Red Dot Attraction

A colored circle beside a menu item reliably generates an app open that would not otherwise occur.

Finding Status: Preliminary. Peer review pending. Behavioral pattern is ongoing.

Primary Finding

Red dot attraction is reliable. Across the observation period, every instance of a red dot appearing beside an application menu item produced an app open within the same session. Not every app open was followed by meaningful engagement. All were preceded by a red dot.

Mechanism

Someone opens an app mainly because a red dot appeared beside a menu item. The content behind the dot is secondary to the dot's existence. In documented cases, the subject opened the application, found no actionable item, closed the application, and checked for the dot's clearance before moving on. The dot had cleared. The session was complete.

The alert is called noise while ignoring it creates more attention. This is the central finding. Noise is a category that implies something worth filtering out. The red dot is not filterable by the subject. It is visible, it is associated with incompleteness, and incompleteness demands resolution.

Any case of red dot attraction that creates uncertainty stays visible until checking feels worse than leaving it. The subject has not reached the threshold at which leaving it feels acceptable.

Secondary Finding

Red dot attraction steals one extra check of the screen. The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. Muting eliminates the sound. It does not eliminate the dot. The dot is the effective mechanism, not the sound.

Attention management turns into another inbox that now requires its own clearing ritual.

Research Status

Findings are preliminary because the pattern is ongoing. A resolution condition has not been observed.
