Progress Report on Dark Mode Loyalty

Reporting Period: All of This Year Subject: Dark Mode, Enabled Continuously Metric Under Review: Whether switching to Light Mode Has Been Considered

Current Status

Dark mode is enabled. Dark mode has been enabled since it became a system-wide option. Dark mode will remain enabled for the foreseeable future.

This report is not an attempt to change that.

Incident Log

March 12: Device used outdoors in direct sunlight for approximately twenty-five minutes. Screen difficult to read. Dark text on dark background creates a legibility situation that the user resolves by increasing brightness to maximum and tilting the device seventeen degrees.

No mode change was made.

June 7: A new application defaulted to light mode. The user changed it to dark mode within ninety seconds. The user did not look at the default setting. The user looked at the screen, registered something wrong, and fixed it.

August 23: Someone asked why the user uses dark mode. The user said it is easier on the eyes. This is sometimes true. In direct sunlight it is demonstrably not true. The user did not reconsider.

The Identity Problem

Changing appearance feels like changing identity. This is a finding, not a judgment.

Dark mode was adopted because of genuine preference, legitimate eye-strain considerations, and a cultural moment that made dark mode feel like a considered position rather than a default setting. It has since become part of how the user identifies their relationship with their devices.

Light mode, at this point, is not wrong. It is unfamiliar. Unfamiliar is harder to fix than wrong.

Proposed Alternative

No alternative has been proposed. The behavior stays mandatory until its challenger also owns a replacement that feels as settled as the current arrangement.

No replacement has been proposed.

One ambiguity causes a repeated action. Repetition becomes evidence of care. Dark mode is still on.
