Sorting holiday notifications by sender formality has produced a secondary attention loop inside the festival season.

Holiday ping filtering is the practice of sorting incoming festive notifications into response tiers before deciding which, if any, require a reply. The tiers are informal. They exist in no application. They are maintained privately and updated throughout the season as volume increases and available attention decreases.
Holiday ping filtering steals one extra check of the screen. The check is not a response. It is a classification act. The person opens the notification, reads the name and the message tone, and files the notification in a mental queue without replying. The queue is then processed later, or not, based on how the day develops.
The alert is called noise while ignoring it creates more attention. This is the paradox the practice attempts to resolve. A festive message from a distant acquaintance does not require a reply. Leaving it unanswered produces a small and persistent awareness that it has been left unanswered. The awareness is lighter than the cost of replying but heavier than zero.
The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. Muting addresses the sound. It does not address the knowledge that messages are arriving. The subject checks the muted thread at intervals that correspond approximately to the interval between arriving messages, which suggests the muting has changed the notification delivery mechanism without changing the attention pattern it produced.
Under the governing rule, holiday ping filtering becomes procedure once the first two filtering passes of the season are complete and the tiers have been implicitly calibrated.
Attention management turns into another inbox. This is the terminal state of the practice. The original inbox is the notification list. The secondary inbox is the mental queue of classified-but-unresponded messages. The secondary inbox requires its own maintenance pass, which is what the subject performs during quiet moments in the festive period rather than resting.
