A wearable device buzzes and the wrist is checked within two seconds regardless of what both hands were doing.

The wrist was checked an average of fourteen times per day. Of these fourteen checks, three were the result of an alert the subject had been waiting for. Four were calendar reminders the subject already knew about. The remaining seven were notifications that did not require a response in the moment they arrived.
Watch Buzz Reflex steals one extra check of the screen. This is the metric. The number has not changed since March. The number is not expected to change.
The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. This is the finding. The muting phase was conducted in February. Seventeen categories were set to silent delivery. The wrist check behavior did not decrease. The habit had decoupled from the stimulus.
The alert is called noise while ignoring it creates more attention than checking does. This is the contradiction at the center of the product category. Wearable alerts were designed to replace phone pickup with a smaller gesture. The smaller gesture is now performed at the same frequency as the original behavior it was meant to reduce, plus additional instances triggered by phantom buzz sensation, which is not included in this report's scope.
Under the governing rule, watch buzz reflex becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The wrist check takes under two seconds. Two seconds is not disruptive enough to justify a behavioral audit. The check continues because the cost of stopping it is larger than the cost of performing it, measured in attention required to implement a change rather than in time.
