What Has Been Classified
The act of opening the video settings panel immediately before joining a work call to confirm that background blur is active. Duration: eight to twenty seconds. Frequency: every call, including calls where the blur was confirmed eight to twenty seconds before the previous call.
Criteria for Classification
Private anxiety becomes procedure when more than one person starts coordinating around it.
The subject performed this check in February 2020 after appearing on a company all-hands call with a visible pile of laundry in the background. The pile was small. The audience was large. The embarrassment was disproportionate. The check was performed before every subsequent call.
By January 2021, a coworker had independently adopted the same check. This coworker was unaware of the original incident. This coworker had their own original incident. Two independent arrivals at the same workaround produced a shared standard without any discussion being required.
What the Classification Means
Any background blur check performed twice may not be removed merely because the original problem has disappeared. The problem has not disappeared. The problem is structural: the apartment is small, the shelves are visible, and the meetings are daily. The blur is a technical solution. The check is proof that the solution is running. These are not the same thing.
A temporary workaround for background blur check becomes the default because it worked once. Other people begin planning around the workaround and quietly preserving it. A person using the ordinary method, which is to say joining a call without checking, now has to explain why they ignored the established procedure.

The home setup was meant to simplify work. Every boundary it created required another ritual. The ritual for blur has a preferred order, a reminder, and a person who is expected to remember it. Skipping the check now looks careless even when the blur has never once been off.
