Provisional Order on Folder Organization Detour
The document was needed. Finding it led to its folder. The folder was not organized. Twenty-five minutes have passed. The folder is now organized. The original task has not started.
In the version of events where the file was found and the task was started immediately:
The file was opened at 10:04am. The task began at 10:05am. The task was completed at 11:30am.
The folder was still disorganized. This did not affect anything, because the task was completed and the disorganized folder was not consulted again that day.
This Version
The file was found at 10:04am. The folder it lived in contained seventeen other files in an organizational state that was noted as suboptimal. The suboptimal state was not the reason for opening the folder. The folder was opened to retrieve one file.
The one file was retrieved. The folder remained open. It was clear that a short reorganization could put the folder in a state that would make future retrievals easier. This was correct. It was also not the current task.
The reorganization began at 10:06am. It required: creating three subfolders, moving files into them, renaming two files whose names were insufficiently descriptive, and deleting a duplicate that had been there since 2024.
At 10:31am the folder was organized. It looked correct. Future retrievals would be faster. This was a genuine improvement.
The Accounting
Time spent retrieving the file: 4 minutes. Time spent improving conditions for future retrievals: 25 minutes. Time saved per future retrieval by the improved organization: approximately 30 seconds. Number of future retrievals required to recoup the 25-minute investment: 50.
The folder has been accessed twice in the past three months.
The Order
The provisional order does not recommend against folder organization. It recommends against folder organization at 10am when a task is waiting at 10:05am.
The folder is organized. The task was completed. Both are true. The sequence is noted.
