Provisional Order on Follow Up Loop
Following up to confirm you received the follow-up about the original follow-up.
Provisional Order on Follow Up Loop
What Would Have Happened If This Had Been Resolved at Step One
The question was asked. The answer required information that Person A did not have. Person A said: "Let me follow up on that."
If Person A had followed up at that point, with the actual information, the loop would not exist.
Person B would have received an answer. Person B would have acted on it. No thread would have been created. No calendar slot would have been reserved. The email subject line would not currently read "Re: Re: Re: Re: Following up on the follow-up."
This is the counterfactual. It is presented here not to generate regret but to establish a reference point.
What Actually Happened
Person A followed up without the information. The follow-up communicated: I have not forgotten about this, and I still do not have what you need.
Person B replied: No problem, just let me know.
Person A sent another follow-up two days later. The follow-up communicated the same thing.
Person B replied with the same phrase.
Current State
The thread now has fourteen messages. The fourteenth message contains a calendar invite for a sync to discuss the status of the original question.
The sync will not produce the missing information. The sync will produce a shared understanding that both parties are still waiting for the missing information.
This shared understanding could have been achieved with one message. The sync is forty-five minutes and includes three additional attendees.
How the Loop Became Formal
The first repeat of the follow-up was classified as diligence. The second repeat generated a thread with a tracked owner. The third repeat generated a recurring calendar event.
The loop now has more infrastructure than the original question warranted.
Its uselessness has become evidence that it needs more formalization. This is the mechanism by which bureaucracy is created.
In the counterfactual, none of this happened. In the counterfactual, Person A also had the information. That is the part nobody has solved.
