Provisional Order on Mute Group Conscience
The group was muted eight months ago. The guilt has not been muted.

Observation Site
A WhatsApp group containing between twelve and nineteen members, depending on whether two additions made in January have been counted. The group was formed three years ago for a purpose that has been fulfilled. It continues to operate.
The group was muted by the observer in September 2021. It remains muted.
Initial Observations
The group generates between three and forty messages per day. The observer does not read these in real time. The notification badge accumulates. At the time of these notes, it reads 847.
The observer is aware of the 847. The 847 has not been addressed.
First observation: the notification count climbs without producing any response because the response threshold has not been met. The threshold is not defined. It is known to exist.
Second observation: occasionally the observer opens the group to verify that nothing urgent has occurred. Nothing urgent has occurred. This verification has been performed approximately twice per week for eight months.
Third observation: the group discussed a matter in March that the observer would have had a relevant opinion on. The observer did not know about the discussion until April. The observer's opinion was no longer relevant in April.
On the Question of Guilt
Muting a group does not alter one's status within it. Membership remains. Obligations remain unclear. The observer continues to be tagged in messages that require a response, which are visible when the group is opened for the biweekly verification check.
The response is composed in the observer's head during the verification check and not sent. The tagged message is noted. The obligation accumulates. The 847 continues to grow.
Structural Note
The guilt associated with a muted group is not caused by the muting. It predates the muting. It is caused by the gap between being present in a group and the degree to which one participates in it. The mute formalized a gap that already existed. It did not create it.
Absurd Rule in Effect
Once a group has been muted for longer than three months, the cost of unmuting it is higher than the cost of muting it was, because unmuting produces a retrospective obligation to acknowledge the 847 messages in some way. The 847 are not going to be read. Acknowledging this openly requires a message to the group that explains the absence. The message has not been sent.
Contradiction
The observer receives direct messages from individual group members and responds within minutes. The observer's phone is working. The group is not receiving these minutes.
