Provisional Order on Notification Sound Identity

A person can now identify which app produced a notification from across a room, based on sound alone.

This provisional order establishes the conditions under which notification sound identity has achieved the status of acquired fluency and addresses the implications for attention management protocols.

Consider the counterfactual: a person who has never owned a smartphone, returned to contemporary life in 2023, would be unable to distinguish between the notification sounds of twelve different applications installed on a device they have not used. This person would experience each sound as a signal of unknown origin requiring investigation.

This person does not exist in significant numbers. The rest of the population has developed notification sound identity: the capacity to identify, without looking, which specific application produced a given sound on a nearby device, including devices belonging to other people. The identification is accurate. It is also involuntary.

Notification sound identity steals one extra check of the screen. The check is triggered not by a rule but by recognition. The sound of a specific application produces a conditioned response in people who use that application, regardless of whether the device is theirs. A table of people at a meal will collectively orient toward a notification sound that belongs to one person's phone. The orientation is automatic.

The check becomes habitual even after alerts are muted. Muting removes the sound. It does not remove the conditioned association between sound and attention shift. A person who has learned to respond to a sound will continue to respond to its absence in sound-sensitive environments, waiting for the cue that no longer arrives and maintaining a slight background readiness for it.

Under the governing rule, notification sound identity becomes procedure once repetition feels safer than reconsidering it. The alert is called noise. Ignoring it creates more attention to the question of what it said. Learning the sounds was efficient. The efficiency produced a new form of ambient monitoring.

Attention management turns into another inbox, and the inbox has a ringtone. This order is provisional pending further accumulation of sounds.
