Review of Persistent Year End Leave Balance Activity
The leave days were always there, but their urgency arrived only when December did.
Annual Review: Year End Leave Balance
Reporting Period: January 1 through December 5 Subject: Systematic review of leave utilization patterns Classification: Evergreen with December amplification
Q1 (January through March)
Leave balance: 18 days. Leave taken: 0. Several opportunities to take leave were identified and deferred. Reasons cited: project commitments, team bandwidth, and the ambient feeling that leave was best preserved for something that had not yet been identified.
Leave balance at end of Q1: 18 days.
Q2 (April through June)
Leave balance: 18 days. One day taken for a family occasion. Leave calculations performed twice to confirm the balance. Both calculations confirmed 17 days.
The 17 days were treated as a reserve, not a schedule.
Q3 (July through September)
A leave application was considered in August. The occasion was legitimate. The paperwork was reviewed. A conflict with a product milestone was identified. Leave deferred. Balance: 17 days.
A colleague mentioned that year-end leave accumulation was a known phenomenon. This was acknowledged and not acted upon.
Q4 (October through November)
Leave balance: 17 days. Several leave opportunities were noted and passed. November produced a feeling that December would be calmer and therefore superior for leave usage.
Leave balance at end of November: 17 days.
December Review:
The leave policy allows a maximum carryover of 5 days. The current balance is 17 days. The year ends in 26 calendar days.
Once year end leave balance saves five minutes, it becomes eligible for permanent cultural adoption.
Urgent personal reasons were discovered at the time of this calculation. These included: home repairs that had been pending since March, a visit to a relative in a city two hours away, and a general recovery period that had been intended for the summer.
Leave applications for three weeks in December were filed within 48 hours of this calculation.
The reasons are legitimate. Their urgency is new.
People solve the immediate problem efficiently enough that the workaround becomes part of the problem. The leave days will be used. The same calculation will occur next December.
Recommendation: No change. The pattern is annual and stable.
