Search record reconstruction: checkbox distrust
The following sequence was reconstructed from behavioral observation. Timestamps are approximate. The subject has not been informed of this documentation.
11:04:37 , Subject encounters checkbox during online form completion.
11:04:38 , Checkbox is checked. A visual checkmark appears in the box. This is the designed behavior of the control.
11:04:39 , Subject rereads the label beside the checkbox. The label has not changed. The label was read approximately four seconds ago.
11:04:41 , Subject looks at the checkmark. Checkmark is still present.
11:04:42 , Subject rereads the label a second time. The reading is slower this time, in the manner of a person who is not convinced that the first reading was complete.
11:04:45 , Subject moves to the next field.
Reconstruction note: The checkmark communicated that the option was selected. The label communicated what the option was. Both pieces of information were available simultaneously and were confirmed within the same second. The reread at 11:04:42 produced no new information.
The screen offered an answer. The user needed the answer to feel believable before moving on. These are not the same thing.

Governing rule: After two unchallenged uses, checkbox distrust gains procedural status for all similar situations.
The distrust is not irrational. Checkboxes have been used to agree to things the user did not intend to agree to. The historical record supports caution. The caution has since extended to all checkboxes, regardless of stakes.
