Soap Sliver Preservation Has Acquired Standing
It is technically soap. That is the whole argument. That is the only argument there is.
Scene one.
The bar of soap is ordinary. It is the size of a bar of soap. It sits in the dish and does what it is supposed to do. Nobody thinks about it.
Scene two.
The bar of soap is smaller. Still functional. A little slippery. People use it without comment.
Scene three.
The bar of soap has become a sliver. It is approximately the dimensions of a large stamp. Using it requires a level of grip concentration that the task does not otherwise demand. A new bar sits nearby, unopened, waiting to fulfill its purpose.
The sliver is not discarded. This is the decision point. This is the moment that will acquire procedural weight.
The sliver is used instead.
It is technically soap. It lathers, faintly. It reduces by an amount not visible to the naked eye. It will require three more uses before it dissolves against a wet palm and becomes a smaller problem in the drain.
There is no argument for keeping the sliver. There is also no argument that feels strong enough to justify throwing away soap.
Scene four.
A second person encounters the sliver. They consider it. The new bar is still there, still unopened. The sliver is still there, still technically functional.
They use the sliver.
Scene five.
The sliver has been used by two people. It has survived three consecutive encounters with a full replacement bar. It has not been formally nominated for continued use. It has, through repetition alone, acquired the status of the correct choice.
Other people begin anticipating the sliver. Newcomers use the sliver. Nobody calls it a rule.
Scene six.
The new bar is finally opened. Not because a decision was made. Because the sliver achieved structural failure against a wet palm, resolved itself into the drain, and could no longer technically be argued to be soap.
The body gives clear feedback, but people wait for the feedback to become inconvenient before responding.
