What the Signal Is Supposed to Do
The subject wears headphones to discourage interruption. When someone approaches, the subject removes one side to signal willingness to engage. The original design intent was to reduce interruptions while maintaining an appearance of reasonable accessibility.
What the Signal Actually Does
The left earbud is removed approximately 60% of the time when someone approaches and approximately 40% of the time before the person has fully committed to the approach, which is more discouraging and also more effort.
The removal of one earbud signals: I was not fully available, but I am partially available now, for a duration I am negotiating via body language rather than language. The signal is non-verbal. The negotiation is legible to both parties and unacknowledged by both parties.
The boundary is meant to reduce obligation. Maintaining the boundary has become a new obligation.
Observed Outcomes
The headphones successfully reduced interruptions during the first three months of use. After this, people learned to approach anyway and wait for the earbud removal, which they interpreted as an invitation rather than a concession.
The subject began removing the earbud earlier, before the approach could reach the standing-close-and-waiting stage, because the standing-close-and-waiting stage creates a more complex social situation than the interruption the headphones were meant to prevent.
The Governing Rule
A limit counts as successful only if the person enforcing it can prove they still care about everyone affected. The headphones are therefore not a limit. They are a visible indicator that the subject has limits and respects the feelings of people whose access is limited.
Consequence
After repetition, household members and colleagues developed a tiered approach: some topics are raised during the earbud-off window, some are saved for screens-dark moments, and some are sent by message while the subject is visibly wearing headphones, as a compromise that respects the signal without accepting it.
This is a sophisticated and entirely unspoken system that everyone involved would deny creating.
Recommendation
The signal should continue. Its effectiveness as a boundary mechanism is low. Its effectiveness as an announcement of the subject's values is high. These are different measurements and should not be conflated.
