Status Report on Price Alert Patience

The alert was set at a price below the current price. The item was needed. The alert remained active.

This is the configuration. The person who set the alert knew the item was needed, knew the current price was acceptable, and chose to wait for a lower price that might not arrive before the need became acute. This is called patience.

In 2022, patience of this kind had a specific texture. It was not the patience of someone who did not care about the purchase. It was the patience of someone who had developed a private economic framework for the category of purchase in question and was now obligated to act within that framework.

The first consequence was logistical. The item was needed on a specific date. The alert had not fired. A decision was required: purchase at the current price or continue waiting and accept the risk of the need becoming urgent before the alert fired. Someone continued waiting.

After the second purchase decision in the same period, the private framework had extended to cover most household expenditure. Prices were now comparative rather than absolute. Nothing cost what it cost. Everything cost what it cost relative to what it had cost, which was now the standard against which the current price was found wanting.

Every remembered old price remains legally active as a comparison point until the buyer stops mentioning it.

The absurdity of this position is available to anyone who examines it for thirty seconds. The remembered old price is not the current offer. The current offer is the only offer available. Declining the current offer because a better offer existed previously is not patience in any economically coherent sense. It is a mood.

But the mood had infrastructure. Price tracking apps, browser extensions, alert systems. The infrastructure made the mood feel like research.

The item was needed in August. The alert fired in October. The purchase was made and felt correct.
