What the Search History Reveals

The person has been attempting to address the subscription email situation for approximately eighteen months. In that time, the person has researched four tools, installed two of them, uninstalled one, and maintained a low-grade intention to revisit the other.

The inbox currently contains 4,200 unread emails. Approximately 3,600 of them are newsletters, promotional messages, and automated notifications from services the person used once in 2019. The remaining 600 are emails the person has not read for reasons that are not related to subscriptions.

The person did not subscribe to most of these emails. The person clicked something once.

The Specific Problem with the Specific Solutions

Bulk unsubscribe tools require granting a third party access to the inbox, and granting inbox access to a tool designed to handle emails you did not want creates a situation where the solution carries the same concerns as the original problem. The person has noted this in a mental tab that has also been left open.

Filters work but require setup time per sender, and there are enough senders that the setup time has exceeded the available attention across three separate attempts. The filter tab currently contains nine half-finished rules.

Subscribing to a newsletter about inbox management produces a newsletter that is never read, which is a closed loop of a kind.

The Actual Consequence

Important emails arrive. Some of them are read. The ones that are not read are in the same location as 4,200 emails that are also not read. The person has developed a reliable sense of which emails are important based on sender and subject line, and this sense functions adequately, which means the 4,200 unread emails are technically not a problem except as a number that is visible when the inbox is open.

The number is always visible when the inbox is open. The inbox is open six to eight hours per day.

The Absurd Rule

The platform displays the unread count as a badge on the application icon, meaning the number 4,200 appears on the dock or taskbar at all times, including times when the person is not actively managing email. The badge is a reminder. The reminder is not producing the behavior it was designed to produce.

The badge cannot be removed without reading all 4,200 emails or marking them read, which counts as a workaround and not a solution, which the person knows, which is why they have not done it.

Current Status

4,200 unread. Two unsubscribes completed in March. One newsletter about inbox management, unread since April. The situation is stable.
