Findings
The goodbye segment of a family call is not one goodbye. It is a series of goodbyes, each of which introduces new conversational material that delays the next goodbye. The material introduced during the goodbye segment is typically lower-stakes than the material discussed during the main body of the call, but it is new material, and new material requires a response, and the response creates an opening for additional material.
The call had a clear conclusion point at approximately the thirty-two-minute mark. The conclusion point was identified by both parties simultaneously, evidenced by a mutual shift in vocal register and a shared "okay, well." This is the recognized signal. Both parties know this signal. The signal did not end the call. The call continued for an additional fourteen minutes.
Both parties are waiting for the other to hang up. Both parties know this. This knowledge does not resolve the situation.
The Absurd Rule
There is an informal social convention that hanging up on a family member during the goodbye sequence, even after the third or fourth goodbye has been exchanged, constitutes an abrupt termination. The convention is not written anywhere. It is understood universally within the households that observe it.
The convention means that neither party may hang up without risk of being perceived as having ended the call prematurely, even when the call has, by any reasonable measure, ended.
The call ends when one party hangs up. The party that hangs up does not feel good about this for approximately three minutes. The party that was hung up on does not think about it again.
The Contradiction
Everyone agrees that calls should end when they have reached their natural conclusion. Everyone agrees that reaching the conclusion and ending the call are different events. No one has proposed a mechanism for converting the conclusion into an ending. The mechanism would need to function without either party acknowledging that they both want to stop talking, because acknowledging this would imply that talking to each other is an obligation rather than a preference, and neither party is willing to imply this, because it is, at minimum, partially untrue.
The call ends when someone hangs up.
