Terms Governing Family Photo Compression
Someone receives an important family photo so compressed that faces need to be guessed.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS Governing the Receipt and Acknowledgment of Compressed Family Photos Effective: Since the Wedding Season Started
Article I. Definitions
"The Photo" means any image forwarded through the family WhatsApp group that has been compressed during transit to a resolution insufficient to identify the faces of the people in it with certainty, typically following a path of at least three devices, two operating system versions, and one group-to-group reforward.
"The Occasion" means the event the photo is intended to document. The Occasion has already passed. The Photo is the only remaining evidence of it.
"The Faces" means the people in the Photo. The Faces are blurry. The Faces require contextual inference. Inference is available from the outfit colors, the approximate heights, and the location of the mandap, which is identifiable despite compression.
Article II. The Governing Rule
A family message gains authority from repetition even when nobody can identify its original source.
The original photo was likely taken on a phone with an adequate camera. The photo traveled through at least one status repost, one forward from the status to a different group, one download-and-reupload cycle, and possibly a screenshot. At each stage it became smaller. By arrival it had become art: impressionistic, emotionally resonant, technically insufficient.
Article III. Standard Obligations Upon Receipt
Upon receiving the Photo, the recipient incurs the following obligations:
- Acknowledge the Photo within a reasonable period, currently understood to be two to three hours for daylight arrival and morning acknowledgment for late-night delivery.
- Express appropriate sentiment. The sentiment must be positive. "Beautiful" is standard. The heart emoji is accepted in lieu of text.
- Refrain from requesting a higher-resolution version. This request implies dissatisfaction with the original transmission and is understood as criticism of the sender's technical choices, which were not choices.
Article IV. The Contradiction
The message is easy to ignore. Ignoring it can feel more socially expensive than reading it. The photo documents something that mattered. The photo is now a six-kilobyte artifact in a phone's storage, from which the something that mattered must be reconstructed by feeling rather than by pixel.
The recipient is asked to care about an image they cannot properly see. The request is successful. Care is produced anyway.
Article V. Escalation
Eventually family photo compression acquires an unwritten enforcement system that everyone denies creating. If the original photographer is identified through the group, a private message requesting the uncompressed version may be sent. This request is understood as technical interest, not criticism. It is accepted on this basis and the original is shared. It is clearer. It shows who was standing next to whom at the exact right moment.
The compressed version is still in the group. It has fourteen heart reactions. Nobody replaced it.
Article VI. Amendment
These Terms may be amended only when someone in the family group installs a photo-sharing app and persuades the forty-three other members to use it.
Amendment has not been proposed. The photo compression continues.
