Terms Governing Forgotten Name Recovery
Article I: Definitions
For the purposes of this agreement, the following terms apply.
"Forgotten Name Recovery" refers to the active process of reconstructing a known individual's name from conversational context, third-party reference, or contextual inference, during an ongoing exchange with said individual, without disclosing that the name has been lost.
"The Name Gap" refers to the interval between the moment the name is recognized as missing and the moment it is recovered or the conversation ends without recovery.
"Context Harvest" refers to any conversational technique used to obtain the name indirectly. Permitted techniques include: addressing a mutual third party and inviting introductions, steering conversation toward topics requiring self-identification, and monitoring nearby speakers who may use the name.
Article II: Governing Principle
Any forgotten name recovery involving two people must preserve the appearance that neither person is keeping score. The governing rule prohibits either party from acknowledging the Name Gap. Both parties are presumed to understand the rule. Neither party may reference the rule.
Article III: Permitted Maneuvers
The name-forgetting party may employ the following without disclosure:
- Sustained and attentive eye contact paired with enthusiastic nodding, creating goodwill while deferring any moment requiring name use.
- Pronoun-only reference throughout the duration of the encounter.
- Phone consultation on the premise of "showing you something" while searching social connection lists.
- Strategic mention of a shared contact: "Did you see what [mutual name] posted?" This often produces a reciprocal introduction.
Article IV: Recovery Threshold
Recovery is considered complete when the name is used naturally in conversation with no preceding hesitation. Recovery is considered failed when the conversation ends and the name has not been confirmed. Failed recovery does not generate liability.
Article V: Mutual Enforcement
Both parties enforce these terms simultaneously and independently. Neither party is aware the other is also enforcing them. This is the mechanism by which the agreement functions.
