Terms Governing Friendship Item Storage
A charger was left here in October. A book came in December. A jacket arrived in February. The shelf by the door has become an annex of someone else's household.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS GOVERNING ITEMS LEFT AT A FRIEND'S HOME
These terms apply when a friend's personal belongings accumulate at your residence across multiple visits without a specific retrieval arrangement being made.
Article 1: The Nature of the Arrangement
Items left at a friend's home exist in a category that is neither abandoned property nor stored goods. They are provisional items whose owner has not yet had a convenient moment to retrieve them, and which the host household has accommodated without formalizing the accommodation.
The accommodation is voluntary and indefinitely extended.
Article 2: The Accumulation Process
Items accumulate through the following mechanism: an item is left after a visit with the intention of retrieval on the next visit. The next visit occurs. The item is not retrieved because retrieval was not the primary purpose of the visit and raising it would feel like a reminder that the item has been there for three months.
A second item arrives. The first item's presence is normalized. The second item joins it. The process repeats.
Article 3: The Shelf
The shelf by the door is the standard storage location. Items placed there are in a liminal state: near the exit, ready for departure, waiting. The proximity to the exit communicates that the items are temporary.
The shelf has held temporary items for seven months.
Article 4: The Retrieval
Retrieval typically occurs when the owner needs a specific item, when the host mentions it, or when either party acknowledges that the arrangement has persisted long enough to warrant a deliberate return trip.
Until then, the items remain. The shelf functions. The friendship continues. The charger is still there if it's ever needed.
