Terms Governing Inconvenient Idea Burst
Article I: Jurisdiction
Inconvenient Idea Burst is defined as the arrival of creative momentum, clarity, or specific useful insights at times and locations incompatible with execution. Governed locations include but are not limited to: showers, transit vehicles, beds in the interval between waking and rising, evening walks, and any situation in which the hands are occupied.
These locations are the official territory of the Burst.
Article II: Capture Obligations
The participant may attempt to capture the Burst by any of the following means: voice memo, typed note, physical note, brief message to themselves, or mental repetition of the key phrase until a recording device becomes available.
The capture is considered provisional. A captured Burst does not guarantee a developed Burst.
Article III: The Desk Effect
Upon the participant's arrival at a designated workspace, the Burst may diminish in apparent urgency and apparent quality. This is a documented response. The governing rule applies: any task adjacent to making may replace making while inconvenient idea burst still feels productive.
The Burst at the desk is the same Burst that existed in the shower. The desk introduces conditions the shower does not have: judgment, accountability, the requirement to begin.
Article IV: Note Archaeology
Captured Burst notes not acted upon within seventy-two hours enter an archive state. Archived notes are preserved and revisited occasionally. Revisitation typically occurs during the preparation phases of a new project. Archived notes are rarely executed. They are frequently used as evidence that ideas have been occurring.
Article V: Pattern Observation
The participant is most creative during commutes averaging forty-two minutes, in the last seven minutes of a shower, and between 11:00pm and 12:00am. The participant does their most sustained creative work at a desk between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm.
These windows do not overlap.
Article VI: Governing Principle
The idea arrives where it wishes. The work occurs where it must. The gap between these locations is the space most routinely filled with notes that did not become drafts.
